Samsung Offers Free Galaxy S8 to Note 7 Owners

Samsung, now oin full damage-control mode, is reportedly offering owners of its defective Galaxy Note 7 smartphone – which was recalled and discontinued due to its exploding battery – a Galaxy S8 handset as a free replacement once the new phone is launched in early 2017.

“The new compensation program is designed to make it easier for those who exchange their Galaxy Note 7 with existing Samsung smartphones, to shift into our next model coming in next year,” Samsung told The Korea Economic Daily. “We think this could an effective program since it also provides some incentives to smartphone vendors.”

Prior to this, Samsung was said to be considering merely offering Note 7 owners a cash discount on the total price of the Galaxy S8 – rather than a free replacement – upon its release next year. Until then, Note 7 owners are able to swap their dodgy phones for a Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge, while anyone who has already taken advantage of that exchange program will still be eligible to obtain the Galaxy S8.

The Korean company is flagging following the Note 7 debacle – seeing its share price plummet – and, as a result, is considering firing 20% of its executive staff in its annual reshuffle, which is scheduled for December.
