Samsung’s Hands-Free Innovation
Samsung is a massive company with plenty of products under development. However, their latest patent reveals an interesting “hands-free” concept for a tablet. In fact, it is straight out of a science-fiction movie. Discovered by a Dutch tech website Let’s Go Digital initially, US Patent 9,891,885 is for a “flying display device”. It resembles a tablet with four mini rotors attached which keep it afloat like a drone. The documentation itself was filed in early January 2016 but was only recently granted.
The idea is for the tablet to maintain level with the user’s eyes. That means it has to keep track of that as well as the user’s head and hands. It also has GPS, Wi-Fi, gyroscope, accelerometer and a vibration system. To complete the hands-free system, there is also voice command present.
What is this Product For?
It is unclear whether Samsung intends to create this product for the consumer or enterprise market. It would certainly be an interesting addition as a floating menu for restaurants. The device can also be useful for floating ads and as a work tool in environments where both hands are necessary on the job. Imagine scaling a communications tower and having a tablet for diagnosing certain electrical problems without the need to use hands. Obviously, it is completely all up to Samsung. When they intend to release this product to market is certainly piquing curiousity.
