A fair amount of people will wake up on April 1st and see the official news that Samsung have spun out their LCD business, which will be renamed Samsung Display and think they’ve woken up to a tech site April Fools joke, but this is no joke. Samsung Display will push away from its parent company come April 1st, pending approval, of course. The new team would start with $667.3 million of working capital.
The new direction is said to keep Samsung’s core business profitable, as its LCD performance has been met with mixed reactions, where they’ve enjoyed success with the smartphone and tablet-based displays, but not so much with traditional computer screens and TVs. Samsung’s recent stardom in the market has been due to their amazingly beautiful OLED displays that power the Galaxy Note, and the soon-to-be-awesome OLED HDTV lineup. Samsung itself will keep the OLED division, which is not moving over to Samsung Display.
This news could rustle up some feathers over at the Cupertino-based Apple, as they rely on Samsung for display manufacturing. Things could get interesting from here on out! Just give me a 75-inch 4K-capable OLED TV and I’ll just cancel my entire life right now.
