Curved everything is the “in” thing currently, with Samsung leading the charge. We’ve reported previously on Samsung’s plans for a curved smartwatch, their curved televisions, the addition of curved smartphones and even one of their big name competitors, LG, looking to release a curved laptop.
If curves are more your style, Samsung have recently announced a release of their 27-inch curved S27D590C display, to be priced at around $450 USD.
As per Phil Gaunt’s words as Samsung’s Director of Display in UK & Ireland:
“Our new, 27-inch curved monitor takes movie watching and gaming to new heights, from the monitor’s unique curved screen and comprehensive entertainment features, to the incredible picture quality and the impressive sleek design. The S27D590C further emphasises our focus to create a truly immersive and unforgettable entertainment experience.”
The curved design allows for an “ultra-wide” viewing angle of 178 degrees horizontally and vertically, along with providing you a high contrast ratio of 3000:1 and 350 cd/m2 brightness in this new model. As for mounting and installation, the screen can be tilted in most directions and supports 100 x 100mm VESA standard brackets for wall or table mounting capabilities.
Why a curved screen? Alongside the extended viewing angles, curved screens are marketed to give you a “3D-like effect”, which Samsung claim to be a great advantage in video game enjoyment especially in genres such as shooters, simulations and racing games.
Are you caught up in the curved craze, or do you think this is another technology fad that will pass? Other big name companies don’t seem to have any current plans to release curved monitors, but there’s a large possibility there are many in the works without us knowing.
