SanDisk develop the world’s smallest 128GB NAND memory chip

SanDisk are very known for their specialization with memory related products such as USB sticks and SD cards but they are not so well known for their innovations with NAND flash. SanDisk have announced that they have developed the world’s smallest 128GB NAND flash memory chip. The record breaking size is just 170mm squared. SanDisk managed such an achievement by using their latest 19nm NAND flash manufacturing process. SanDisk also claim that their chips have ‘X3 technology’ which allows each memory cell to read and write three bits of data. SanDisk’s MLC NAND Flash products are currently in their ninth generation while their X3 technology is in its fifth generation.

However, for those performance freaks out there who are hoping this will bring blazing fast SSDs at a cheaper cost, you will be disappointed. These micro sized 128GB NAND chips only read or write at 18MB a second so they are intended for high capacity smartphones, tablets and devices of that nature where really high bandwidth isn’t a necessity.
