Sandy Bridge-E Xeon Line up announced

Intel has planned the release of the latest Xeon processors in Q4 of this year. They will be for the dual socket “Romley-EP” platform and there are a substantial number of processors being released ranging from 2 cores and 4 threads all the way up to 8 cores and 16 threads. Cache ranges from 5MB to a whopping 20MB and the RAM speeds supported vary between 1066MHz to 1600MHz. TDP is also interesting the lowest processor has only 60W and there is also a hyper threaded 8 core processor running off only 70W, the Xeon E5-2650L but the fastest of the crop, the E5-2687W has a large TDP of 150W so it would appear Intel is going to have to rethink its stock cooler design to account for the large TDP of these server grade CPUs.

There in total are five 6 core processors, three 4 core processors, a single 2 core processor and eight 8 core processors. Note that except the two entry level models (The Xeon E5-2603 and Xeon E5-2609) all the processors will have hyper threading and turbo boost enabled on them. The L processors are low voltage and low power ones whilst the single “W” 8 core processor is the fastest. No pricing from Intel yet but if the last generation of Xeon’s are anything to go by expect four figures for most of these.
