Sapphire 7900 XT & AOC Q24G2A – A Perfect Upgrade for Competitive Gaming?

There’s no shortage of high-end and rather awesome graphics cards these days, and while I admit, the prices are a struggle for many of us, there are more factors behind that than I need to get into right now. However, since my old graphics card had died after many years of hard work, it’s time to give it a good burial and then replace it with something better with a budget that I was hoping to keep under £1000.

There’s no doubt that if you do want higher performance in your games, you certainly have a lot of options, both in the second-hand market and in the new GPU market. When it comes to generating high frame rates, there are a few options from Nvidia, such as the RTX 3080, which are largely all second-hand or refurbished now and still cost £690-780 and is basically the same price as the much newer RTX 4070 Ti. The RTX 4080 is £1230-1420 and the RTX 4090, which may be extremely fast but is still reaching prices of £1650-1900.

A typical day buying graphics cards; totally worth it though.

AMD seems a lot more wallet-friendly right now though, with the 6700 XT starting at £299.99, the much more modern and powerful RX 7900 XT still only costing £728.99, and the AMD flagship card costing anywhere from £900 to £1000.

Now let’s get this out of the way now, Nvidia has some features that AMD are still behind on, such as Ray Tracing. But if you just care about frames, and that’s a perfectly valid assumption, then there’s clearly money to be saved here. Look at our most recent overall average FPS results, the RX 7900 XT is ahead of the RTX 4080 and RTX 4070 Ti. We’re leaving the RTX 4090 out of the equation here, given it costs double that of the 7900 XT.

Even at 1440p, you’re still getting incredibly high average FPS and strong 1% lows. Check out any of our full reviews to see all the games that generated these results.
