Sapphire has recently been branching out and you will have hopefully seen a few of their Sandy Bridge motherboards or maybe their souped-up graphics cards. However they are pushing the boat out a little bit further and making a new line of lifestyle PC’s’.
Their first release is the EDGE-HD Mini PC and let’s be frank it is tiny. It occupies less than half a litre in total volume with dimensions of 19.3cm * 14.8 cm *2.2 cm. It also weighs just 530g.
So as it’s so small you’d expect the specs to be a bit limited, well I think you might be surprised. Firstly it is using a 1.66 GHz dual-core Intel Atom D510 as well as a nice 2 GB of DDR 2 RAM. It also includes a 512 MB NVIDIA ION 2 GPU, which should handle all your media needs. They also somehow manage to fit a 250 GB hard drive in it. This isn’t anything special but it will certainly cope with general desktop tasks and even some gaming.
Of course this also packs WiFi (802.11n), gigabit Ethernet, VGA, HDMI and 4*USB 2.0 ports. A nice plus is that under load the power consumption is only 22 W, so you’re not exactly going to notice the electricity bill go up even if it is on all the time!
Unfortunately, Sapphire have decided to ship this with FREE DOS to keep the price down but it is fully compatible with Windows 7 (and of course Vista + XP), however expect resellers to offer bundles with Windows 7 installed.
There are no official details on pricing yet, however it is available on some Internet Stores for little over £350 (without OS), but this will nearly certainly drop over the next month or so.
