External Graphics Expansion
Sapphire is announcing the launch of the GearBox Thunderbolt 3 eGFX box. It is essentially a new expansion chassis for Mac Pros, Ultrabooks and Small Form Factor Computers. As the name states, it uses Intel‘s Thunderbolt 3 connectivity technology for high-bandwidth single-wire transfers. Which of course means that users require a Thunderbolt 3 compatible device.
This is useful for both gamers and media professionals who want to add a discrete graphics card upgrade to their setup. Since laptops generally come with underpowered GPUs, the ability to add desktop-class graphics is a big deal.
For Sapphire’s part, they are offering the barebones GearBox chassis, and also offering bundles as well. That means users with existing graphics cards can just buy the barebones unit. However, those who wish, can also get the ones with Sapphire Radeon video cards pre-installed. The GearBox enclosure has a built-in 300W power supply so that should be more than enough to power most video cards in the market.
How Much is the Sapphire GearBox Thunderbolt 3 eGFX?
