It’s been pretty well known that following the launch of various new tech products late last year, actually getting hold of one of them (any one of them) has proven to be more than a little difficult. Of course, this is thanks in no small part due to scalpers looking to turn a quick profit by snapping up as many retail models as they can and then reselling them on online market places such as eBay.

Well, if you wanted an idea as to just how serious this problem has been, following a report via DSOGaming, it has been estimated (after extensive research) that scalpers reselling AMD Ryzen 5000 processors have generated (roughly) $5.88M in sales from eBay alone!

AMD Ryzen 5000 Scalpers!

Based on the growth of scalpers throughout the latter part of 2020, data engineer Michael Driscoll from DEV.TO decided to conduct an in-depth analysis of sales of the Ryzen 5000 processors on eBay and specifically comparing the values they were selling for to the original MSRP price/s.

As a result of his research, he determined that around 8,720 AMD Ryzen 5000 CPUs had been ‘resold’ on eBay, which generated $5.88M in sales. Based on comparative costs, this would, therefore, suggest that resellers made a profit of just under $1M whereas eBay themselves grabbed about $625K from their sales commission.

What Do We Think?

Given the lack of AMD Ryzen 5000 processors currently available to purchase, this news is clearly more than a little frustrating. You see, not only are scalpers successfully grabbing them (and in big numbers), but it would also seem like people (and actual consumers) are buying them with their inflated price tags. Something almost certain given that the Ryzen 5 5600X represented around 33% of all sales.

So, please, please, try not to buy from scalpers because, at the end of the day, you’re only hurting consumers everywhere!
