Developed by a company named Magic & Mirrors, Nelo actually surfaced for the first time in 2014, but it took another two years for the game to receive its own Kickstarter campaign. What we have here is an arcade twin-stick shooter that comes with a few innovative features, particularly as far as the in-game camera is concerned. To be more specific, it looks like the game will boast two viewpoints, namely a third person one and a top-down style. From what I’ve seen in the Kickstarter campaign, the game was designed to appeal to those of you who are willing to try out new gameplay mechanics, and that’s definitely a good thing.
“Nelo hybrids gameplay of twinstick shooters with modern action games, as well as offer many other unique mechanics and gameplay scenarios. It takes inspiration from retro-like shooters such as Geometry Wars and Robotron 2084 and turns it into an intense, 3 dimensional action-adventure experience with a gritty, sci-fi art direction.”
Moreover, Magic & Mirrors have also decided to release a prototype demo of Nelo, which can be downloaded right here. Companies have given up on demos for quite some time now, so it’s refreshing to see a developer who’s actually willing to offer a playable gameplay preview to potential backers. As for the camera, the developers explained why they chose this mix of third person and top-down angles:
“This shooting system is more important to the combat than sounds as a concept. The twinstick shooter mode is very beneficial for fast, close quarter combat because it gives you a better view of your surroundings. But the third person mode offers better range and verticality. We mapped this ability to the right mouse button and the left trigger on the gamepad because we use it as much as other shooters use aim down sights.”
