Scientists Propose Independent “Space Nation” – Become a Citizen Now

A team of scientists, lawyers, and engineers have launched a proposal for a new “space nation,” tasked with creating a new universal space law and protecting the Earth from stellar threats. Named after the mythical realm of the Gods in Norse mythology, Asgardia will be an “independent platform free from the constraint of a land-based country’s laws,” initially comprised of a number of satellites.
“Physically the citizens of that nation state will be on Earth; they will be living in different countries on Earth, so they will be a citizen of their own country and at the same time they will be citizens of Asgardia,” Igor Ashurbeyli, Project Lead for Asgardia, told The Guardian. “When the number of those applications goes above 100,000 we can officially apply to the UN for the status of state.”
“I do believe that as soon as this country becomes a part of the UN family, citizenship of that country will be really quite prestigious,” he added.
The Asgardia website states that “any human living on Earth can become a citizen of Asgardia.” If you want to sign up, visit the site and fill in the simple registration form. While the citizens of Asgardia will continue to reside on Earth, the project leaders hope to establish its first space presence with a satellite next year, followed by Asgardia shields (pictured below), which will protect the Earth from space debris and asteroids.
