Scythe Introduce Mugen 4 CPU Cooler

Ever since I first reviewed the Scythe Mugen 3, nearly 200 days ago now, I was truly impressed with its impressive performance for such a small price. In fact to date, I’d go as far to say it is probably the best CPU cooler on the market at its (£40) price point. With that in mind it is incredibly exciting to be able to tell you that Scythe have now come out with their Mugen 4 CPU cooler, the next incarnation of the incredibly popular Mugen series.

Japan has been the first market to get the new Scythe Mugen 4, SCMG-4000, which builds on the design of its predecessor the Mugen 3. It features what Scythe are calling TMAPS (three-dimensional multiple airflow pass-through structure) which is essentially an unorthodox fin arrangement that improves the airflow and therefore cooling performance of the CPU cooler.

Scythe have also updated the mounting mechanism with their HPMS (hyper-precision mounting system) which is essentially a new retention module that takes fewer steps to install compared to the previous model. Having reviewed the previous model I can tell you it certainly was fiddly and challenging to install, although it did give an extremely firm high-pressure mount. The Scythe Mugen 4 will support Intel’s upcoming Haswell LGA 1150 processors.

The Scythe Mugen 4 retains the six 6mm heat pipes but they are capped slightly differently to the Mugen 3. The base is nickel plated copper and a Falcon 120mm PWM fan is the active cooling component of choice with a 400 to 1400RPM range pushing 20.7 to 79CFM. Measuring 130 x 88 x 160 mm, the cooler weighs about 625 g. Release is expected for April the 24th and it is priced at 4,980¥, US $50 or £40 like its predecessor.
