Scythe Mugen 3 Rev.B CPU Cooler Review

The first thing we felt appropriate to have a look at concerns the RAM clearance and compatibility. As the image below demonstrates high profile RAM such as G.Skill Trident X (5.4cm high) actually fits but forces the fan upwards meaning it doesn’t blow air over the bottom heat sink which is attached to the CPU contact block like it would do in the normal position. High profile RAM wouldn’t fit in slot 1, in slot 2 it is still a squeeze. For users with two high profile RAM modules you would have those in slots 2 and 4 anyway (due to the way dual channel DDR3 works in LGA 1155 motherboards) so it shouldn’t be a major problem. Low profile RAM like our Kingston HyperX kit, fits perfectly underneath the Scythe Mugen 3.

Here you can get a better view of the fact the TridentX RAM actually pushes the fan up about an inch over the top of the Mugen 3 tower heat sink.

With the correct height RAM installed and the fan in its normal location you can see there is about 0.5cm extra clearance for RAM, but the message is that you would need low profile RAM to be fully compatible with this cooler so carefully consider your options.
