Scythe SCNJ-5000 Ninja 5 CPU Cooler Review

Performance

During much of the above, we have referred to the Scythe Ninja 5 as a ‘high-performance’ air cooler. We should note, however, that as far as we can ascertain, Scythe themselves do not make that assertion of the Ninja 5. It is, however, something of a fair assumption when dealing with coolers of such a significant size.

In terms of performance figures, the Ninja 5 does remarkably well. Even in comparison to many AIO liquid coolers. It is, however, when the noise levels are inspected that this cooler really begins to show it’s potential.

Stock Temperatures

In terms of stock temperatures, the Scythe Ninja 5 manages very impressive figures in terms of air cooling results. A particular highlight is the 29c idle temperature which is something that even many AIO coolers struggle to hold. In terms of general gaming or high-load performance though, this cooler has no problems at all.

Overclocked Temperatures

While the Ninja 5 may not be entirely impressive at stock temperatures, it certainly has a lot to offer in terms of overclocking. Suddenly that huge radiator starts to work hard and it’s not found wanting!

As can be seen in the figures it finds itself much higher on the list and even managing to provide figures better than many 240mm AIO liquid coolers. It again supports the strong (but unpopular) opinion that air coolers can be just as good (and even better) than liquid when designed well!

Stock Acoustics

In terms of noise levels, the Ninja 5 is exceptionally impressive. While it isn’t silent, for a dual fan air cooler, it is remarkably low-key in its activities. If it’s working hard, it’s keeping very quiet about it! Clearly, the fans and that unique heatsink design must do a pretty excellent job of moving the heat away from the CPU.

Overclocked Acoustics

When overclocked, the noise levels are as equally impressive as when in stock mode. With the Ninja 5 again finding itself in the top 10 results (and not that I want to drive this point home, but beating many AIO systems even for noise) this cooler clearly has more than a few feathers to put in its cap!
