At the time of writing the Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim 1TB USB drive can be yours for $73.77 at NewEgg, £49.99 at Amazon, or €61.93 through Geizhals.
Conclusion
Seagate created another great drive with their Backup Plus Ultra Slim and it is one that once again sets new standards for the thinness of mechanical drives. While we only tested the 1TB version here today, the same drive is available with 2TB capacity in the same size too. That’s impressive.
The Backup Plus Ultra Slim series features a new top cover with a grooved design that gives it a feeling of being more of a premium drive than the other Backup Plus drives. Thereby not said that they felt cheap, this one just looks and feels like a higher premium device. The silver and gold colours available further increase this feel.
Performance wise we saw somewhat mixed results. The drive performed well for a 2.5-inch sized drive, especially when it is connected through USB that on its own adds another layer the data has to pass through. There were some odd drops throughout the benchmarks here and there, but as said, the overall performance was good. The drops we saw are most likely not some you’ll notice in real-world applications, but they do become visible in synthetic tests such as ATTO.
The bundled Seagate Dashboard app further increases the value of this already cheap drive by adding a row of useful backup and restore features to your PC and Mac PCs as well as your Android and iOS mobile devices. It also integrates with several cloud providers to give you even more backup options. You also get a bonus of 200GB OneDrive storage on top.
Pros
- Compact and ultra Slim with its 9.6mm
- Good performance
- USB 3.0 Interface
- Available up to 2TB
Cons
- A few performance drops here and there
“The Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim shows us that size is something that should be challenged. The slim drive performs great even though the physical size keeps shrinking while the capacity doesn’t.”
Thank You Seagate for providing us with this sample.
