Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim 1TB USB 3.0 HDD Review

Introduction

Today’s review is especially for the people who like to take their storage with them where ever they go and for those that otherwise need a lot of external capacity in a small form factor. The latest Seagate drive in the Backup Plus family is the Ultra Slim drive and today I’m taking a closer look at the 1TB model with a silver finish.

The Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim portable hard disk drive is also available with a gold finish and in a 2TB capacity version for both colours. The gold colour will match golden Apple devices well while the silver version takes a simpler approach. With a size of just 113.5 x 76 x 9.6mm, the drive is highly portable and it will easily fit into your pocket, purse, or bag.

The top is silver while the bottom is left black, which gives the drive a nice contrast. The top also features a grooved design that makes it easy to hold while it also sets it apart from other drives. A small drive is a lot easier to drop, and you wouldn’t want to do that to any drive. The grooved surface should help prevent that.

Otherwise, the drive is a fairly simple one with a Seagate logo in one corner and a multi-coloured LED in the other one.

The bottom of the drive is as simple as the top and it looks like the other Backup Plus drives that we’ve seen. The Seagate logo is used to give the bottom a bit more texture than just being a smooth surface which again helps you keeping a grip on the drive. You can also find a few drive information here such as model, product number, serial number, and capacity.

With the USB 3.0 connection and support for UASP, the drive should perform really well despite being a small 2.5-inch drive. It is rated for a sequential performance up to 120MB/s which is about what you would get from a modern internal drive. Included is an 46cm (18-inch) USB 3.0 cable for the connection.

Seagate also bundles some software with their drives that is free to use. You get easy Lyve Photo App support as well as Seagate’s Dashboard app for drive monitoring and status. You also get 200GB free OneCloud Storage for a two-year period.

Feature Highlights

  • Ultra Slim: Only 9.6mm thin
  • Up to 120MB/s Transfer Rates
  • USB 3.0 Interface
  • Available in 1TB and 2TB version
  • Seagate Dashboard, Lyve App, and OneDrive Cloud Services
  • Warranty: 2 years

Package and Accessories

The Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim drive comes in a simple package that shows the actual drive colour through the transparent part on the side. You also find the important information about the drive on the front, such as capacity and that this is the ultra slim model.

The rear has a few more information on the specifications and compatibility in several languages.

Inside the package, you’ll find a small quick start guide although I doubt anyone will need it, and a USB 3.0 type A to type B connection cable.
