The Seagate Game Drive PlayStation is available now with the 2TB (available in black) for £93.55 but on sale for £74.99 at the time of writing, and the 5TB was out of stock on Amazon but is available at other retailers for around £149.99, which I think is too high, as other Seagate 5TB drives are just £108.99 right now, so be sure to shop around for a deal closer to that!
This is a great product, and while it’s clearly not for everyone, it’s filling a need in the market for those who require reliable and cost-effective backup solutions for their games. For me, I have very fast internet, so downloading a 100GB game is a 2-3 minute job, removing my need for such backups. However, it wasn’t long ago that 100GB would have taken me several days to complete, and I have many friends and family who are lucky to get 50mb/s download speeds. In that case, the Game Drive is going to be a LOT faster for you to backup and restore the game when needed, rather than redownloading it.
It’s not the fastest drive ever, but it’s using 2.5″ mechanical hard drive technology, which hasn’t changed much in the last 10 years. However, what it does offer is big capacity in a relatively compact and affordable form factor, and that’s hard to ignore. You can get faster drives around £120-150 but they’ll be just 2TB, and a 5TB SSD drive would easily cost you £400+, and at that point, you’d be better off just upgrading your console’s internal SSD anyway.
The official PlayStation branding is welcome though, it feels like a proper part of the ecosystem and matches the aesthetic of the PlayStation 5. So sticking it under your TV or on your desk beside your console is easy, and it doesn’t look out of place. Plus, we know it’s compatible thanks to the official Sony certification, but really it’s a USB drive that will work on a vast array of other devices, so if you just want a cool and clean-looking PlayStation HDD to use with your laptop or PC, well, you could use it for that too.
Seagate has released dozens of these branded or special edition game drives, and in terms of hardware a lot of them are actually pretty similar, so if you wanted one of their Marvel, StarWars, Halo, or many other themes, then they’ve got a little of something for everyone these days. The prices are competitive, the build quality is fantastic, and the performance is right where I expected it to be. If you need to backup your games, or any other files for that matter, you get exactly what you pay for. Highly recommended!
