Unfortunately, it looks like these drives are out of stock, or perhaps not in stock yet (at the time of writing) on Amazon. However, you can check for up to date stock and prices here. However, the 2TB has an MSRP of £99.99 and the 5TB has an MSRP of £159.99. Seagate provides a comprehensive where to buy on their product page, which I suggest you check out to find the nearest retailer to you. Also, these drives are around £15 more than a blank one, so if you’re purely after storage, you can get the 2TB for around £85. However, for the aesthetic and for the Horizon Forbidden West collectors out there, paying a little extra for the licenced design seems fair enough to me.
Overview
It’s good to see Seagate continuing this range of custom designs for the external hard drives. Hard drives are frankly about as exciting as cold toast when it comes to aesthetics, so putting them in a fancy case is about the best thing you can do. Many gamers put a lot of time, effort and money into having a great-looking gaming PC, a stylish looking desktop, an interesting living room gaming setup, and much more beyond. So if you’ve got everything set up looking sexy, the last thing you want is a beige box hanging off the side of your system. With that in mind, the Seagate Game Drives are a stunning addition to your setup.
While this drive is surely going to appeal to fans of the game, I must admit, I haven’t played the sequel yet, and I still want this drive. It’s just a damn nice looking thing, and easily one of the more interesting designs they’ve done in a long time. I think it’s good enough that serious collectors of the game’s merchandise would likely snap one of these up and pop it on a shelf. Not me though, I’d bust open that box and put the hardware to use as intended.
While I have faster storage at my disposal, such as my NAS, there’s still a lot to be said for these smaller drives. It’s great for backing up larger game files if your console is short on space and your internet speeds either suck or have bandwidth limitations. I’m hesitant to backup newer games though, as they’re often in need of significant patches by the time you restore them anyway. However, backing up last-gen titles is usually a lot more reliable as they’ve often had all the updates they’re going to get. This drive will store a good number of games, and the transfer speeds are steady enough that going and making yourself a coffee should be all that’s needed while waiting for a larger game to backup. PS4 games can be installed directly to it and played from it too though. Albeit, moving them back to the PS5 internal storage will have them load faster, but it’s nice to have options.
If you’re looking for an affordable, reliable and reasonably portable storage device, the Seagate Game Drive is great and priced very competitively. However, if you want one that looks truly awesome too, then paying a little extra for this Horizon Forbidden West one is highly recommended. I should probably go check out the game now too, couldn’t hurt!
