Conclusion
Seagate impressed me with their Guardian series right from the start and it hasn’t changed as they’ve released more products into the series. The newest 14TB drives are generally impressive, but we’re here to talk about the IronWolf Pro.
The IronWolf Pro HDD is designed for NAS usage in all its aspects. The dual-plane balancing and vibration sensors allow it to be used in enclosures with up to 24 drive-bays. Naturally, they’re also 24/7 always-on certified as your storage server probably won’t be turned off. It is also perfect for multi-user environments. That goes for access times as well as workload ratings. It comes with a 300TB/year rating which is impressive. The performance is at least as impressive as it easily does 250MB/s.
One of my favourite features in the series is the IronWolf Health Management system, or IHM for short. IHM adds another layer of protection on top of the basic SMART functionality. IHM is able to predict errors before they happen instead of reporting them after the fact. Prevention is a lot better than reaction, especially when it is your data that is hanging on the output.
Despite the 7200 RPM spindle speed, the drive is surprisingly silent. You won’t really notice that it’s runing, unless you really listen for it. It is backed by a great 5-year warranty and the Pro series also offers a 2-year Data Recovery service on top. A huge and valueable bonus.
