Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid Drive Review

We would personally love it if the price of SSDs was to fall dramatically allowing us and laptop manufacturers to install larger capacity SSD’s as standard. However, this is clearly not going to happen any time soon, so instead we do genuinely think this is one of the best alternatives out there.
If you are looking for a drive that can boot up Windows and all of your programs very quickly, then this drive performs very well. We were certainly very impressed with the ‘algorithm’ which decides what files need to be stored in the fast solid-state sector, and it produces impressive results over all of your frequently used programs. Even if you don’t use a program that often, the pure performance of this drive does put most laptop drives to shame so it is still going to give a visible improvement.
We were hoping that when transferring large files (still under 4 GB) that the drive would use the solid-state sector to give nearly instant transfers and write to the hard-drive at a later time, but unfortunately the drive presumably keeps it rather full and so it is a shame that it can’t utilise the superior transfer speeds.
At a price of only £83.98 from Scan.co.uk this is a remarkable performance increase without compromising on your storage capabilities. We very much hope Seagate are planning an even larger, faster version of this drive in the near future.
This drive is a compromise between storage and speed, but we do feel that they got the balance just right, and as it is at a very competitive price this is absolutely ideal for all users who are looking to upgrade their laptop hard drive but still require lots of storage capacity and can’t afford the cost of a large SSD.
