Seagate Ultra Touch 4TB USB-C External HDD Review

A Closer Look

It’s a nice look product, but somewhat understated, which is something I actually like. It has a light colour to it, not quite white, more like a granite or light grey look about it with a small green section on one side.

As Seagate was eager to tout, the drive is made from 30% post-consumer materials, and that’s what gives it that ever so slightly textured and speckled look. Basically, the recycled material is ground up into little flakes then used to pack out the 70% new plastics to create the external shell.

It’s something that may not sound like much, but honestly, Seagate is doing this, ASUS is doing it on one of their new laptops, and other brands are doing a few similar things too. I have no way of working out how much plastic this prevents from having to be created, but 30% off what could be hundreds of thousands of items is certainly a lot.

Around the back, you can see that green stripe runs quite a bit down the back too, it’s a nice look, even if for some reason it does sort of look like an expensive bar of soap.

It’s a good size drive, about the side of an old school iPod or wallet, so you could fit it in your pocket or chuck it in your laptop bag when you travel. It’s basically a 2.5″ laptop mechanical HDD in a USB enclosure, so expect performance to be pretty slow, but that’s reflected in the price; if you want an SSD drive, expect to pay much more for this level of capacity.

On the end, there’s a Type-C USB port and a small LED indicator.

If you’re a fan of quick and easy setups, you’ll be glad to know it’s plug-and-play ready and should work on just about any modern device; smart TV, consoles, mobile phones, laptops, Mac, and PC.
