Seasonic Platinum 1050W Modular Power Supply Review

Final Thoughts

Pricing

The Seasonic 1050W Power Supply is available from Scan.co.uk for £187.38, which lets be honest, is fairly expensive, but if you want premium quality and high levels of efficiency, you’re going to have to pay a premium to get there.

Conclusion

It didn’t take much to convince me that this was a premium quality product. From the moment we took it out of the box, you could see and feel that the Seasonic 1050W is very well made, it has a good weight to it and a premium quality finish overall. The included cables are of a very high standard, with just the 24-pin being a thick braided cable, while all the others are a flat-type, which is going to help greatly with cable management, especially if you have limited routing space behind your motherboard. I also like the fact that the cables, any braiding and the connectors are solid black, which will look nice and uniform once installed in your system.

The performance was exactly where we expected it to be, with consistent voltages, good ripple suppression and efficiency that slightly exceeded the 80 Plus Platinum specifications. Of course, you will have to pay a premium for this kind of quality, but if you want to ensure your system has clean, stable and reliable voltage running through it, you certainly get what you pay for.

The hybrid fan mode is a welcome bonus too, especially for day-to-day desktop use, as you’re unlikely to experience full-load on the PSU all of the time, in which case the fan stops completely, giving you silent performance; that’s always a welcome bonus. The fan did get up to some higher RPM at full load, but there’s a good quality fan installed and I found the noise levels to be perfectly acceptable when the PSU was being stressed.

Pros

  • Fully modular cables
  • All black cables with majority flat-type design
  • Hybrid/Normal fan control
  • Consistent voltages
  • Good ripple suppression
  • Excellent efficiency
  • Capable of running 40%+ higher than rated output before OPP kicks in

Cons

  • None

Neutral

  • It is an expensive PSU, but you get a great quality product for you investment

“It’s easy to see why Seasonic are one of the leading PSU manufacturers in the world, favoured by system builders for their premium quality and performance. If I was building a new system today, I’d be very happy to user the new Seasonic 1050W Platinum to power it.”
