It has been almost 20 years since SEGA released their last games console, but the company is still relevant due to the properties they own. Their latest initiative is ‘SEGA Forever’ and it is a celebration of their legacy; a love-letter to fans worldwide. Under this new banner, SEGA intends to release their classic titles on iOS or Android devices, completely for free. Five classic Genesis titles will be the first to be included in the launch:
SEGA intends to keep the ball rolling and resissue the rest of their catalog. This range goes as far back as the SG 1000 Mark I, all the way through the Dreamcast. Playing on the platform is completely free, and it will even have leader boards. This allows players to truly measure and compare their skills with everyone worldwide. The only optional fee present is $1.99 to remove all advertising forever within the app.
The publisher will be listening closely to community feedback in terms of which games should be added next. Ultimately, SEGA intends for this platform to be a sort of ‘NetFlix of retro gaming’. Although the company did not officially announce whether SEGA Forever will be available for the PC, they are considering its possibility.
