Sega Says Genesis Mini 2 Will Have Exceptionally Limited Stock (Outside Japan)

Originally teased earlier in the year, back in June Sega officially confirmed the upcoming launch of a brand new Genesis Mini 2. Well, either that or the Megadrive Mini 2 depending on your region I suppose. – Coming bundled with 50 games including a number of Sega-CD titles, the system was already garnering a lot of attention from people looking to add to what is slowly becoming a mini-system collectable market.

If you are planning to grab a Genesis/Megadrive Mini 2, however, the news isn’t looking overly promising as following a report via TechSpot, Sega has confirmed that, outside of Japan, stock of the system is going to be exceptionally limited. It will, in fact, see only around 1/10th of the stock that the original mini-system did!

Sega Genesis Mini 2 – Expect Exceptionally Limited Stock!

In announcing the news, Sega has predominantly cited two key reasons why stock for their new mini-console is so poor. Firstly, we get the old familiar chipset shortage problem (we’ve heard that one enough to know what it means without any further explanation). The second one, however, is a lot more interesting. Namely, it doesn’t appear that Sega ever intended for this console to be released outside of Japan. As such, it would appear that to get your Genesis/Megadrive Mini 2, you may have to order it directly from Sega of Japan, and then, of course, not only pay for the cost of the system but also the shipping fees as well.

Put simply, it doesn’t appear that Sega has any plans for retail release outside of Japan, and, as such, they have only had exceptionally limited regional stock made available outside of the country. As such, with its release set for October 27th, unless you live in Japan, the chances of you ever seeing this available to buy legitimately (ignoring the scalpers who will undoubtedly appear) is pretty low.

And by this, we probably should err more towards non-existent.

Who knows though, as the chipset shortage continues to improve, Sega might be ready to give this a better international release in the future. I mean, given the popularity it already has, it would be surprising if they didn’t!
