Sega get serious in PC Gaming business, acquires game developer “Relic”

Sega recently spent US $26.6 Million to buy THQ’s Canadian based game development firm Relic Entertainment Studio during the bankruptcy auction, therefore acquiring titles such as “Company of Heroes” and “Warhammer 40K”. Warhammer 40 Dawn of War sold over 7 Million copies worldwide and Company of Heroes sold over 4 Million. The Japanese-based company said that it purchased the firm to reinforce PC game development in the U.S. and Europe.

Sega’s bid of US $26.6 Million was awfully close with Zenimax’s bid of $26.3 Million accounted to the documents filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

Sega is the company behind the now phased-out console Sega Dreamcast but is behind well known titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog, chain of arcade games and is a part of a larger company that earns money from Japanese gambling hardware. Relic was founded in 1997 which was later bought by THQ in 2004.

Company of Heroes 2 viz. developed by Relic is planned for release this year on PC. Its unclear if the acquisition of the firm will alter the game’s release date. Also, Sega also acquired a game project with the codename “Atlas” that is currently under development and scheduled for a 2014 release.
