It took 14 years, but Sennheiser is finally replacing their HD 650 headphones. You have to admit, that is quite admirable for a company to stand by their product for that long. That is almost unheard of in this day and age where high-end products get replaced every year. Then again if you create something great, it only makes sense to replace it if you have something better.
The new Sennheiser HD 660 S actually looks quite identical to the HD 650. It retains the open back design, massive pads and sliding headband. If it works, why fix it, right? The main difference lies inside. The new HD 660 S features all-new transducers resulting in lower harmonic distortion. The sound is also supposedly more natural and uncolored, making it ideal for studio monitors. To maintain the quality, each pair of HD 660 S is hand-tested and hand-matched. This ensures that what comes out of the left and right ear cups are identical.
Another major update over the HD 650 is the lower impedance of 150 Ohm. This means users no longer need a powerful headphone amplifier just to use the new high-end Sennheiser headset. According to Sennheiser, it should work on most smartphones as well.
The Sennheiser HD 660 S costs £429.99 and should be available immediately in the US. UK and other markets should be getting it soon as well.
