When Shadow of the Colossus released for the PS2 in 2005, it was a graphical masterpiece. Coming towards the end of the consoles life cycle and just a year before the PS3, it was the swansong for the console. One of the major stand out features for the title was just how gorgeous it was.
In 2011, Shadow of the Colossus was re-released with HD upscaling bundled with the also excellent Ico. In truth, at that time the game was brought onto par with the PS3’s graphical capabilities, however, lacked the polished to really wow fans of the series. 6 years later, and with the remastered edition of the game now in the works, the new trailer makes something crystal clear. Shadow of the Colossus is really looking to blow our graphical minds again.
More often than not, I get concerned when I hear the word ‘remastered’. Usually, or at least in my experience, the term is very loose. For example, the Full Throttle Remastered Edition was great, but the ‘remaster’ wasn’t heavily worked. It was basically a replacement of the original bitmap sprites for vectors. When Shadow of the Colossus was announced at E3 earlier this year, I did at the time stress this difference. I should, therefore, be clear again, this is a completely new, from the ground up, remaster. To the point that the word ‘re-make’ may actually be more accurate.
As can be seen in the trailer below, some serious work has gone into recreating the visual factor of the original. In addition, with the creator suggesting some minor changes to improve the title, good things are surely on the way here.
