Shenmue 1 & 2 Remakes Have Sega’s Full Attention

shenmue 3

Do you remember playing the iconic Dreamcast classic that was Shenmue? I know I do! And Ever since it was released, it seems people have been pushing for more games in the series, HD remakes, rereleases and more. There’s no doubt that the game was a lot of fun, and it certainly innovated in the realm of open-world 3D gaming, but are Sega leaving it a little too late to revisit?

“There is definitely a desire [to go back to our classic games],” European Sega boss Jurgen Post told MCV this week. “Even online, people are constantly talking about products they would like to see come back, and Shenmue 1 and 2  are probably in the top two places. We are looking into it. It is an old IP, it is a beloved IP – and not just by consumers, but also within Sega, we have people saying that if we could do Shenmue 1 and 2 all over again, we’d definitely go for it.”

The main problem now is that the game doesn’t look as slick as it used to, and bringing it up to modern standards would be a pretty huge task, as well as adding support for modern platforms along the way. The game’s various licences are old now too, which would need to be renegotiated. Long story short, there are a lot of hurdles to cross to get this project off the ground.

“We are looking into it,” Post continued. “We haven’t given it a green light, but it has our full attention.”
