SIGMA Announces sd Quattro H Mirrorless Camera

SIGMA corporation, a manufacturer known mostly for its off-brand camera lenses, announced their new APS-H sensor mirrorless camera named “sd Quattro H”.

The APS-H sensor stands in-between the Full Frame (35mm) and APS-C sensors size-wise. It is a rather “large” sensor, which is a good thing since with bigger sensors comes higher image quality even with High ISO values.

The SIGMA sd Quattro H sports a 51MP equivalent Foveon X3 sensor. That should be enough to give this little (compared to the Canon and Nikon counterparts) camera an image resolution equal to the top high resolution offerings from Canon and Nikon (5dS/5dS R and D810 respectively).

Just like its rivals, the SIGMA sd Quattro H lacks an OLPF (Optical Low Pass Filter), which is great news for photographers as the OLPF reduces the perceived resolution and sharpness of the photos (however missing an OLPF can result in more troubling Moire compared to a camera with a OLPF). The Foveon sensor has a 1:1:4 RGB photosites ratio (meaning that for every Red and for every Green filtered photosite there are 4 Blue filtered photosites).

The SIGMA sd Quattro comes with native DNG file support (it captures RAW photos in both “SIGMA’s” X3F format and the DNG format). It can shoot in Burst Speeds up to 8fps, it features a 2.36MP Electronic ViewFinder (EVF) with near 100% coverage compared to the LiveView 3″ 1.62MP LCD screen.

Last but not least, it is designed to take advantage of SIGMA’s “SGV” lenses for great Image Quality (IQ).

At the moment we have no details at all regarding its price and the possible kit lens package, all we know is, that it will definitely be pricier than the 999€ SIGMA sd Quattro + 30mm f/1.4 Art lens kit (its lower resolution sibling).
