Final Thoughts

Pricing

The Silicon Power Slim S80 solid state drive hasn’t fully arrived in the UK yet, but I did find a danish shop shipping to the UK. Xstra digital storage has the 240GB model listed for £116.70 with free shipping within the EU. German readers can find it starting from €109.95 through Geizhals while US readers can pick up one at NewEgg for $99.99 or Amazon for $84.99.  Now that’s one heck of a deal there US readers, worth to check out.

Conclusion

Silicon Power markets the Slim S80 as perfect for netbooks and ultrabooks with its 7mm profile, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t be equally good in your desktop system. We saw a great performance throughout all our test with fast speeds up to 555MB/s while reading and 520MB/s writing. Random performance was also great for a drive like this, scoring up to 60K IOPS while writing.

Feature wise the SP Slim S80 doesn’t lack either. It has the basics such as S.M.A.R.T., NCQ, and TRIM, but it also features RAID support, error correction code, AES encryption, and DevSleep. The last one is great for the designated area of use, netbooks and ultrabooks, as it helps to achieve lower power consumption and thereby can extend your battery life.

The drive in itself is very simple designed, but it’s built very solid and feels sturdy. It has a simple sticker on the top with company logo, capacity, and serial number, but nothing else. That is not a lot of information, but we rarely need more. Whether the packaging is good or bad is really just a matter of your personal needs. The SP Slim S80 comes packed in a blister package without any accessories. Some might like this because they don’t need anything extra while other will prefer a drive with screws and adapters included.

The drive is backed by a 3-year warranty which it should outlive easily.

Pros

  • Good price, especially in the US
  • Great performance
  • ECC, AES, RAID support
  • DevSleep and 7mm height for Portable devices

Cons

  • Can be hard to find in the UK

Neutral

  • No accessories

“Silicon Power’s Slim S80 wouldn’t just be great in your mobile system, it would be in any system. The drive delivered great performance at a competitive price.”
