A report by Bloomberg suggests that SK Hynix will reopen their fabrications that were involved in a fire on Tuesday September 3rd. The pictures revealed to the media about the SK Hynix incident suggested a huge catastrophe that appeared to have destroyed both foundries #1 and #2, SK Hynix says this is simply not the case.
“Currently, there is no material damage to the fab equipment in the clean room, thus we expect to resume operations in a short time period so that overall production and supply volume would not be materially affected.” SK Hynix said in a statement.
The fire started at 3:50PM local time and was extinguished by 5:20PM. The large amounts of black smoke are due to the fact the fire was concentrated in one of the air-purification facilities.
Since the fire, market speculation has seen shares in all major DRAM and NAND producing companies rise dramatically, including those of SK Hynix, Samsung and SanDisk. Of course what SK Hynix are trying to get across is that supply will be affected but only for as long as they have to be shut down to fix the fire damage. Both foundries will return to full operation “in a short time”. Obviously the shorter that time is the lesser the impact will be.
