DRAM and NAND flash manufacturer SK Hynix is launching GDDR6 and HBM2 memory before the end of the year, according to a new catalogue listing. The South Korean memory giant has added 12Gbps and 14Gbps GDDR6 memory plus 1.6Gbps HBM2 memory to its Q2 2017 databook [PDF].
SK Hynix will ship two types of 8GB GDDR6 memory – 12Gbps and 14Gbps – during the last quarter of 2017. GDDR6 memory will feature in NVIDIA’s next-gen, Volta-based GeForce graphics cards, which is expected for release early-2018.
14Gbps GDDR6 memory, coupled with a 256-bit interface, delivers 448GB/s memory bandwidth.
Before its GDDR6 memory release, SK Hynix’s second-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) will launch during the current quarter. This means the 4GB, 1.6Gbps memory – which will power AMD’s Vega graphics cards – will ship by the end of June. An earlier version of HBM2 was originally listed as 2Gbps in an earlier databook and was slated for release last year. This change may have contributed to delay the launch of AMD’s Vega-based Radeon cards.
NVIDIA’s Tesla P100 and Volta V100 cards will also feature HBM2 to be provided by Samsung, not SK Hynix.
