The latest edition of Databook has just been released. For those unaware, Databook is basically a catalog detailing memory chip availability. This is both for existing and for upcoming products.
As part of that release, SK Hynix is listed as having their own GDDR6 memory chip. Now this in itself isn’t too surprising. Samsung only recently announced that they had begun production of GDDR6 memory chips.
What is surprising, however, is that SK Hynix has listed GDDR6 memory as being available. As in, designed, built, done, ready to go.
This means that companies such as Nvidia and AMD may already be working with the new memory chips and in consequence, the next edition of graphics cards could be set to include the newest memory available.
There are, in comparison, some differences to the memory announced by Samsung.
Most notably is that Samsungs announcement said that they were working on 16/18GBPS chips. In a report via VideoCardZ, SK Hynix, however, are reported to have produced 8/14GBPS.
While obviously lower, do not forget that SK Hynix would seemingly have already finished theirs. Samsung, again, only just announced theirs was in production.
GDDR6 is set to be a massive innovation in graphics card memory with figures suggesting that speed performances may double what we have seen in GDDR5.
We will, of course, keep you up to date with any updates as we hear it, but don’t be surprised if the next flagship AMD or Nvidia graphics cards are carrying GDDR6. It is most definitely on the horizon and if the Databook report is to be believed, it is possibly already here.
