While parts of the DLC do take place on familiar territory, you will find yourself exploring everything from new castles, dungeons and even completely new territory, taking you to previously inaccessible, or newly created areas of the Skyrim map, as you seek to destroy / renew the vampire presence in the lands of Tamriel. Even with Skyrim’s expansive play area the new additions are more than welcome as in my case things start to feel a little familiar after a few hundred hours of play time, so some new sights to explore and set foot in are one of the best things about this DLC. Gameplay in general is much like you would expect from the main game, the only thing that really controls or plays any different is when you are using the vampire lord ability, but if you’re already a fan of the werewolf transformation, it’s a familiar concept.
The new story is robust, as creatively and well voice acted as the vanilla game and really draws you into the underworld of Skyrim that little bit further, it gives the game a few new dynamics that you can bring through to your main quest. Given the open nature of the game itself, you can choose to nip back and forth between the main game quests and the DLC at will, just as you can any other quest in the main game, meaning you don’t feel tied to play through the DLC in one go, keeping with the games open world style throughout.
