Skyrim Special Edition Will be Free to PC Users Who Own The DLC

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is one of the most ambitious role-playing games created and set in a stunning world brimming with detail. Even though the console versions have aged quite badly, the original PC edition still looks incredible due to mod support. PC players can download UI tweaks, graphical improvements, and other user creations to enhance the experience. Thankfully, developers are finally seeing the value of user mods which encourages people to keep playing many years after the initial release window. Prior to Bethesda’s E3 conference, information leaked regarding a new Skyrim remaster which seemed like a sensible move given the current consoles’ support for higher graphical fidelity.

As expected, Bethesda announced Skyrim Special Edition for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. This particular edition features remastered art and effects, volumetric lighting, dynamic depth of field, new water shaders and much more! Not only that, the console versions now officially support modding which means there should be a huge array of interesting user creations. PC users might rightfully feel this version is almost pointless because mods can produce exceptional graphics with support for 4K textures. Thankfully, Bethesda has considered this and decided to upgrade any users who own the Legendary edition or full DLC package for free. So far, this doesn’t look like a similar strategy will apply to the console versions. While some people might consider this unfair, I think it’s a smart move because the new console versions are a huge upgrade on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases. This is especially in the case for PlayStation owners because Skyrim on the PS3 was horrifically broken as the developer struggled to code for the Cell architecture.

Skyrim Special Edition will launch on October 28 and pricing information should be revealed very soon. Are you looking forward to revisiting Skyrim again or would you prefer to see a new Elder Scrolls game?
