“I’m going to get a can of pop from the machine, do you want anything?” – “Yes, I’ll have a gin and tonic, spliff and a box of .50 cal please”. Words you certainly would not associate with a trip to the vending machine. Well, the Smart Vending Machine might be about to change that!
It really does sound crazy, but that idea is being touted in a reported by the BBC. This of course, as a whole, does not apply to the UK. We have quite strict laws regarding all 3 of those things. However, in countries such as America where gun ownership and medicinal cannibis is legal, this could be coming sooner than you think.
Sounds crazy right? I certainly raised an eyebrow at the ammunition side of things, however, when you think of this, this technology even in the UK could have some very real benefits. For example I am certain that if this was given the green light, clubs throughout the UK (and the world) would fill up with alcohol dispensing machines. Hypothetically, smart technology could allow Smart Vending Machines in this circumstances to be programmed to provide any drink, even cocktails. As a fan of the occasional pitcher of Tom Collins or a Long Island Ice Tea, I wholely endorse this use of the technology.
Well, that’s where the ‘smart’ part of Smart Vending Machine comes into it. The vending machines would be programmed with biometric technology. This would work by reading the vains in your fingers. This apparently would allow it to determine your age and if you have the right to purchase. Now on the surface of things, that seems very open to explotation. I hope hope there is a level of security beyond this, but who knows, maybe the vains don’t lie.
While I wouldn’t expect to see these on the streets any time soon, as I hinted above, don’t be surprised if these turn up in nightclubs soon.
Oh and if you were thinking a Smart Vending Machine was one of these, you were nearly right. You can read about those here!
