Sonic The Hedgehog To Have Live Action Film in 2019

Sonic The Hedgehog

While the internet might currently be groaning under the weight of Ugandan Knuckles memes (if you don’t know, don’t ask), Sonic the Hedgehog is still a highly-popular franchise. It is, however, surprising that after nearly 30 years, countless games, a TV cartoon, and a very bad drawing later Sonic hasn’t had a live action film.

While we have understood for around a year one was in the words, the Sonic the Hedgehog live-action film has finally been confirmed and will likely release in 2019.

Must go faster!

When it was initially revealed that a Sonic film was in the works, Sega’s plan was to release it this year. For one reason or another, however, that didn’t come to pass. In fairness, not the first time we have seen a video game film delayed from 2018. If you may recall a Five Nights at Freddy‘s movie was supposed to be releasing this year and in a report via Polygon, that’s looking more likely to 2019 now.

So, we at least now know that a Sonic live-action film is in the works, but anything else?…

What do we know so far?

The short answer is a few things, but only some very basic details. We know that a release is planned for November 2019, Deadpools Tom Miller is the executive producer and that the film is expected to have a combination of live-action and computer animation.

Beyond that, all we have is speculation. Perhaps based on the history of most video-game to film adaptations, it will also be disappointing. Yes, cynical I know, but it’s been nearly 16 years since Sonic had a really great game, what are the chances of him getting a great film?

What do we think?

A Sonic the Hedgehog film could work, but it would have to follow certain very generic conventions. Firstly you clearly need to have the good guy/bad guy dynamic and Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman) would be a good antagonist. My only slight concern is that Sega understands who they are making this film for. If they aim entirely for kids, they’ll be missing a trick. The vast majority of Sonic’s fanbase is now 30 somethings. Depressing I know, but any film must have some appeal to that demographic.

What do you think? Can a Sonic film work? What would you hope for it? – Let us know in the comments!
