Sonnet is a specialist in high-performance external devices and the new Fusion Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Flash Drive is no different. It is a rugged and pocket-sized solid state drive which packs both performance and capacity.
“Our Fusion PCIe Flash Drive with Thunderbolt 3 is the world’s fastest bus-powered device. It’s capable of delivering the ultra-high file transfer speeds required for just about any 4K workflow — whether users need an ultra-fast shuttle drive or a take-anywhere scratch drive for editing high frame rate 4K video at offsite shoots,” said Robert Farnsworth, CEO of Sonnet Technologies. “And now, with the increase in capacity to 1TB of NVMe storage plus macOS compatibility, the drive is even more versatile than ever.”
Rugged and Portable
Measuring a compact 2.8 inches wide by 4.1 inches deep by 1.25 inches tall, the Fusion PCIe Flash Drive fits into the palm of your hand. The enclosure is crafted out of aluminium which makes it sturdy and eliminates the need for a fan to keep it cool.
Fusion with Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 has quickly become my favourite connector standard. The only downside is that it is an Intel-created system, which means that you won’t find it on AMD motherboards. But if you have the bus, you get 40 Gbps bandwidth through a single cable. That is plenty of performance for the Sonnet Fusion which also gets power from the same cable. There’s no need for extra power supplies, and that’s great for a portable drive.
While Thunderbolt 3 has the ability to daisy chain up to six devices to a single host port, the Fusion only comes with a single port. That means that it will be at the end of your chain. In fact, the port is hidden inside the drive and the cable is attached to it. The company promises easy replacement in case of the cable breaking, so it’s not bad.
The Power of NVMe
Thanks to the performance of NVMe, there’s no need for a RAID 0 setup. Many other devices that feature a fast external performance can only offer it through a multiple drive setup. That’s not the case here where the Fusion Thunderbolt 3 drive is built with a single module. It is still able to deliver up to 2600 MB/s performance.
Pricing and Availability
The Fusion Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Flash Drive with 1TB capacity (FUS-TB3-1TB) will be available late September 2017 at an MSRP of $999.
