Sony Adds HDR Pass-Through to New PlayStation VR Model

Sony is quietly introducing a new model of the PlayStation VR, which streamlines many features from the original. Unlike the old PSVR which debuted last year, the new design does not require users to disconnect in order to view HDR content. In fact, the new model is easily distinguishable from the original just from looking at the cables behind. The new design therefore is much cleaner and organized looking. It also helps that the connection cable to the PlayStation console is thinner.

Upgraded Sony Hardware

Inside, the processor unit is an upgrade from the original, making HDR pass-through possible. This new headset uses different connectors. So in order to take advantage of this feature, users would have to buy a new unit. The new model goes by the product name “CUH-ZVR2”, and is going to be available in Japan initially then North America. The pricing according to Famitsu magazine is around ¥44,980. This converts to around $400 USD. Sony did not disclose when exactly it will hit the North American shores however, but promises to keep pricing the same. In Japan, it will start selling on October 14 and will have a distinct packaging from the original, so there is no confusion among buyers.

All games will continue to be compatible with both versions of the PSVR.
