Sony Adds SATA3 Support on the PS4 Pro

The PS4 Pro is Sony’s attempt to try and discourage console owners from moving to the PC platform mid-cycle. Unfortunately, the message thus far has been really confusing and Sony’s focus on 4K gaming appears to be a misstep. I think they’re underestimating the amount of people who own 4K TVs and the minefield that currently surrounds whether titles run at native 4K or upscaled. This doesn’t make it easy for the average consumer to identify what kind of experience they can expect. On another note, it’s come to light that some games may not receive a PS4 Pro patch while others have a tiny team working on them. Honestly, I think this should have been a device which targeted 1920×1080 at higher frame rates.

Despite this confusing message, the PS4 Pro has an attractive price point and other commendable improvements. For example, the unit supports the SATA3 interface which can properly take advantage of SSDs to their full potential. The original PS4 opted for SATA2 which meant installing fast storage drives resulted in almost non-existent performance gains. Now that the PS4 Pro has SATA3, loading times should be reduced and create a more enjoyable gaming experience. Although, end-user will have to pay a hefty fee to use 1TB of storage via an SSD instead of the stock storage solution.
