Sony Announces Xperia Z5 Smartphone Range

Sony Z5Sony has unveiled the latest additions to the Xperia range during IFA in Berlin, today, which includes the Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium. All three of these handsets feature a revolutionary 23-Megapixel sensor and F2.0 G lens. The front-facing camera utilizes a 5x zoom and 0.03-second autofocus to help improve the clarity of sudden, action shots. Sony’s SteadyShot software acts as an image stabilizer during video capture and enhances user results in low-light conditions. This is a common complaint with smartphone cameras so it will be fascinating to see how well this actually works. Jun Makino, senior product manager for Sony Mobile delved into detail about the new camera sensor:

“The biggest pain point when it comes to smartphone cameras is missed opportunities. A smartphone is a device that you always have with you, but sometimes you can miss spontaneous moments because it doesn’t focus in time, or you just simply miss it,”

“We want to change it so that, with one shot, you get the perfect image. So no more having to take ‘just in case’ shots, or having to recreate the scene.”

The standard Z5 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB RAM, 2900mAh battery, IP65/68 waterproof, 5MP front camera, up to 32GB onboard storage and microSD slot supporting a maximum capacity of 200GB.

So how can we differentiate between each handset? The Z5 is Sony’s mainstream device and opts for a 5.2″ 1080×1920 IPS display. In contrast to this, the Z5 Compact is rather small by today’s standard and its screen measures 4.6″. Unfortunately, Sony decided to scrap the idea of a better PPI screen and reduced the resolution to 1280×720.  Not only that, the RAM is limited to 2GB, and the battery is now rated at 2700 mAh. This is a reasonable concession though given the 720p resolution which require less processing power.

Finally, the Z5 Premium is touted as ‘the world’s first 4K phone’. Unlike the lower end Z5 versions, the Z5 Premium features a 5.5″ 3840×2160 IPS display with an astonishing screen PPI of 806 and a 3430 mAh battery which Sony claims will last up to 2 days.

According to Clove, the Z5 will retail at £525, and its bigger brother, the Z5 Premium is expected to launch around £650.  04. Z5_white_group
