Sony to Close PlayStation Mobile

After suffering a recent dearth of interest, Sony Computer Entertainment is to close its PlayStation Mobile software delivery service.

Sony tried its best to push the service and attract independent developers – “to help out all the talent out there” – by waiving the publisher licence fee (€80/£65/$99) for a promotional period, but not even that was enough to boost interest. The licence fee promotion, which allows developers to publish games on PlayStation-certified devices, will now last for the duration of the service. Though, each licence is valid only for a year, so after the promotion expires it may be necessary to renew it for a fee annually.

PS Vita users who want to continue playing games purchased through PlayStation Mobile need to complete the device activation before the service closes. Go to [Settings]> [PSN]> [System Activation]> [PlayStation Mobile]> [Activate]> [OK].

PlayStation Mobile will close on 10th September, 2015, though the storefront will be taken down earlier, on 15th July. Closure of the PlayStation Mobile Developer Portal will follow on 30th November, 2015.

A final warning, courtesy of Sony:

Ensure you have downloaded all of the games that you want to keep, because after 10th September 2015 you will not be able to re-download your purchased content.

Devices that are not authenticated prior to 10th September 2015 will be unable to access previously purchased PSM content after that date.
