Sony Introducing External HDD Support in System Update 4.50

In an upcoming software update, Sony is introducing external HDD support, which is great news for PS4 owners who find a lack of space a problem.

If you haven’t yet accepted your fate and moved over to PC, you’ll find space to store games and data on a console can be very restrictive, this latest move will see your console become even more PC like.

John Koller posted on their official blog;

“It’s easy to upgrade the HDD that came with your PS4, but if you’re still looking for more storage space on the console, we’ve got you covered. With this update, you have the option to store content to an external HDD. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilà, you now have more space on the console.”

The supported size of HDD is a massive 8TB, and users will be able to download and install directly to it, although user save files will still be stored on the console.

Another feature coming in the update is custom wallpapers. Finally users will be able to use their favourite screenshot as their wallpaper, it makes you wonder what took them so long to implement such a simple feature.

Other features in the update include a simplified notification list, quick menu refresh, the ability to post directly to your activity feed, and finally, 3D blu-ray on Playstation VR.

Users who have signed up for the beta will have (or will be) received an email with the instructions on how to get started with the testing phase. As of yet there is no release date for the update, and there are more features yet to be announced. This looks like it’s going to be a huge update, so don’t expect it to be out within the very near future.

What features would you like Sony to add to future updates? Let us know in the comments.
