Sony has announced that PlayStation 4 support for video streaming platform Ustream, which has been a staple of Live from PlayStation since its launch three years ago, will end at the start of August.
The official statement from Sony reads:
On August 1, 2016 (timing of termination may shift behind depending on the region), Sony Interactive Entertainment will terminate the following Ustream features available on the PlayStation®4 (PS4™) system and Live from PlayStation®:
- Broadcasting gameplay to Ustream.
- Viewing Ustream broadcasts from “Live from PlayStation” on the PS4 system, PlayStation®App (PS App) and PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita).
Players can broadcast gameplay via YouTube, Twitch and DailyMotion and enjoy viewing these broadcasts via Live from PlayStation.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we appreciate your understanding.
Ustream had become popular as one of the more eccentric online video streaming platforms available, and will be sorely missed by its cult audience.
“Ustream has probably been my favourite little corner of the PlayStation 4 since it launched,” Martin Robinson of Eurogamer wrote, “offering an eccentric and often unpoliced window into people’s lives via the PlayStation Camera and The Playroom. I’ve think I’ve spent as much time idly browsing broadcasts as I have in Destiny, so it’s a feature that’s going to be sorely missed.”
Other video services, such as YouTube, Twitch, and DailyMotion remain available through Live from PlayStation, with Sony giving no indication that they are at risk.
