Sony PlayStation VR Recommends a Minimum of 90 FPS

Virtual Reality is often regarded as the future of video games and could revolutionize the way we all consume content in the future. However, headsets like the Oculus Rift require a great deal of processing power to cope with the device’s 2,160×1,200 at 90Hz dual OLED display. According to Oculus, the minimum requirement to use the headset as intended is an Intel Core i5-4590, and GTX 970/R9 290. Of course, Oculus isn’t the only company manufacturing a virtual reality headset, and many people are hoping the PlayStation VR will be a more affordable proposition.

Recently, Vernon Harmon, Senior Technical Account Manager at SCEA conducted a talk entitled, “Embracing Virtual Reality of PlayStation VR.” During the presentation, Harmon advised developers to aim for 90 frames-per-second as a bare minimum on PlayStation VR and said:

“We suggest you hit at least 90 if not 120.”

This is a sensible piece of advice as these devices require a much higher frame-rate to maintain a smooth experience. However, users might be concerned that this could make the PlayStation VR extremely expensive on launch. This is to be expected though given the technical challenges surrounding the platform. Any launch product always incurs a hefty price, and PlayStation VR could cost a lot of money. However, it’s better to work on the fundamental experience and allow the device to appeal to more consumers over time as manufacturing costs decline.
