Fergal Gara, Sony’s executive leader of the UK’s PlayStation division, told the Official PlayStation Magazine that pre-orders are much higher than they could of expected. Gara states that PlayStation 4 sales are doing extremely well to the point where if anyone has placed a pre-order after August 5th they might not actually get the console on release day due to a lack of demand. There could be delays of “a few days” for those who pre-ordered after August 5th.
“The problem with pre-orders, which is a good problem to have, is that they’re very, very high. Higher than we’ve ever seen in 20 years in this business.”
Sony recently announced the release date for the PlayStation 4 would be November 15th in North America and November 29th in Europe. Gara says that retailers should not promise release day delivery because many may not be able to honour that due to high demand. He also claims there will be tough negotiations ahead in terms of whether retailers will be allocated enough stock to sell PS4s after the release date has passed.
Microsoft has not yet revealed its official delivery date for the Xbox One but expect it to be around the same time frame.
