Sony UBP-X800 4K Blu-Ray Player Pricing Revealed

At CES 2017, Sony announced their first (technically second) Blu-ray player, and ahead of its launch next month, the Sony UBP-X800 Blu-ray player pricing has finally been revealed. For whatever reason, Sony is fashionably late to the Blu-ray party, but the UBP-X800 packs a lot of features, and are possibly asking a little too much for it.

The current pricing on the Sony website suggests a RRP of £400, considerably more than what you’d pay for an Xbox One, which also has a 4K Blu-ray player, as well as being a gaming machine of course.

The UBP-X800 plays pretty much every type of video format and disc type, and also supports the usual audio and image formats. It also has 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz wi-fi, as well as an ethernet connection. Connection wise, it has 1 USB port on the front, and 2 HDMI on the rear, there is a lack of an optical connection, however.

You can also enjoy 4k streaming, thanks to the already installed Netflix and Amazon streaming services. One question I am seeing asked an awful lot, is if it supports Dolby Vision, and I can tell you it does not, although most won’t find this a problem, for those who may consider coughing up for one of these, it might be a deal breaker. It will however support HDR using the more established HDR10 format.

Overall, the UBP-X800 looks like a solid, stylish, well thought out Blu-ray player. There are a couple of questionable omissions from the specification, but nothing too drastic that it should affect sales. The only off putting part may be the price, going forward, this is a device you’ll probably see on offer quite a lot, if you were thinking of buying it, it may be safer to wait a little while.

Would you buy the UBP-X800 at its current price? Do you think the features they’ve packed into it are enough to justify the price? What do you think of the UBP-X800, does it do everything you’d expect or does it do more?
