Expectations are high as gaming peripheral maker Razer is set to enter the smartphone market with an official announcement on November 1. However, specifications have already leaked out via GFXBench and it is packing impressive hardware. Despite the expansion to the smartphone market, Razer is not abandoning their gaming roots. In fact this smartphone might be for true gaming fans as it appears to have specifications tailored for mobile players. Razer acquired smartphone maker Nextbit earlier this year and this is the fruit of that partnership.
The Android phone will be running 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box with a custom Razer UI. It has 5.7-inch screen with 5 finger gesture support, and supports WQHD resolution (2560 x 1440). The hardware under the hood is running a Snapdragon 835 octa-core running at 2.4GHz. Meanwhile, the GPU is a Qualcomm Adreno 540, supporting OpenGL ES 3.2, and OpenCL 2.0. This GPU also now fully supports DirectX12 and Vulkan APIs, making it very versatile. Since it is going to be a gaming smartphone, Razer opted for a larger 8GB memory so apps will not starve.
How well does it perform? Since it is on GFX bench, the benchmark results are readily available. On the Car Chase benchmark running OpenGL ES 3.1 + AEP, the Razer phone got 855 frames onscreen (14.5 fps average). Meanwhile, Manhattan 3.1 got 1325 frames per second onscreen (21.4 fps average).
In terms of other features, the phone has an 11 megapixel back camera with a 7 megapixel front-facing camera. The back camera is also capable of 4K video recording, while the front camera can record up to QXGA video resolutions (2048 x 1536). The phone has an accelerometer, NFC, GPS, compass, bluetooth, barometer, gyroscope, lightsensor and has one simcard slot. Those are the only details available for now, as the company is still preparing the phone for the official announcement on November 1.
