I have a lot of mixed feelings when it comes to Final Fantasy XV. Graphically, the game was a joy to behold. Particularly the PC release which came earlier this year. The attention to detail and the scope of the game was absolutely fantastic. There was, however, one major problem. Specifically, after about the halfway point, the plot disintegrates and the game becomes horrifically linear.
I’m not going to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t played it, but all I will say is, enjoy it up until about mission 8 because after that you’re railroaded to the finish in an alarmingly linear (and plot hole riddled) pace. It feels like Metal Gear Solid 5 in that the last ‘act’ wasn’t finished but time was running out. So they just cobbled something together and hoped no one would notice.
Square Enix made it perfectly clear that they had plans to release at least 4 major DLC expansions for the game in 2019. In a report via DSOGaming though, with the exception of one (looking at Ardyn) every other addition is dead, cancelled and never to appear! It would seem that the Ardyn DLC (still set to release in 2019) is either done or nearly done. Why? Well, Square Enix has also confirmed that the PC development is officially over.
So yeah, with the exception of one DLC pack to come, Final Fantasy XV is effectively done. How disappointing!
Final Fantasy XV for the console and PC was a success, despite the games huge shortcomings. There were many of us, however, that was hoping that the DLC could fix some of the game’s problems. Specifically, fill in all the gaps in the plot and perhaps even make the 2nd half a lot less boring!
Worse though, Square Enix specifically said that the PC version of the game would include the DLC packs for free! Well, instead of getting 4 major expansions in 2019, we’re just left with the one now! Suddenly, I no longer regret uninstalling this game a month ago.
So, what about anyone new to the game? Well, while Final Fantasy XV is worth playing, but with this new announcement, my advice is very clear. Play the hell out of the game up until chapter 8. Explore, do side quests, whatever. In brief, do as much as you can in the world because, after that point, all the fun ends! It’s a linear game and you’re just along for the ride!
